CYRENA VAN GORDON (CAMDEN, OHIO, SEPTEMBER 4, 1892 – NEW YORK CITY, APRIL 4, 1964)

She was born Cyrena Pocock. She studied singing at the Cincinnati Conservatory under the pedagogue Louise Dotti. In 1913, she was engaged by conductor Cleofonte Campanini for the Chicago Opera, where she made her debut as Amneris in Aida. On December 26, 1917, she appeared there in the premiere of the opera Azora by Henry Hadley. In 1921, she sang the part of Brünnhilde in Walküre at the same opera house; however, this remained her only soprano role.

On November 4, 1929, she performed as Amneris in the opening gala of the new Chicago Opera House. At the Chicago Opera, her repertoire included Ortrud in Lohengrin, Fricka, Erda, Marina in Boris Godunov (1920, with Fedor Chaliapin), Dalila in Samson et Dalila, Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera, Azucena in Il trovatore, and the Principessa in Suor Angelica. In 1933, she joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York for a season, where she performed only as Amneris in Aida. At the Philadelphia Opera in 1935, she also sang in the American premiere of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide. Later, she resided in New York, where she remained active as a pedagogue.
