Description
KURT BAUM (COLOGNE, MARCH 15, 1900 – NEW YORK, DECEMBER 27, 1989)
Kurt Baum was born in Prague in 1908. He studied voice in Rome and Milan, and made his debut in Zurich in 1933. He sang with the German Theater in Prague (1934-1939), but left to escape the Nazis. He came to the United States in 1939, and at first joined the Chicago Opera (1939-41), but in November 1941 he joined the Met, and sang there until 1967. He also appeared at La Scala (1948-49) and Covent Garden (1953). While at the Met, Baum sang 18 roles in 352 performances. Although not considered a singer with much finesse, his voice was stentorian, and his high notes the envy of many tenors. Baum died in 1989.
