His father was Italian, and his mother was Jewish. The family emigrated to Canada before the First World War. The artist began studying singing with the famous Charles Dalmorès in Los Angeles and then joined the opera choir of the San Francisco Opera. Additionally, he studied singing at the Curtis Institute and with Bernardo de Muro in New York. From 1938 to 1940, he frequently appeared in concerts at Radio City Music Hall in New York. In 1941, he made his debut with the San Carlo Opera Company. That same year, he sang at the Montreal Opera House, and also at the Philadelphia Opera (as Rodolfo in La Bohème). During the 1943-1944 season, he performed at the Chicago Opera. In 1942, he made guest appearances in Havana and Chile, which he repeated in 1946. In 1944, he had a very successful debut at the New York City Opera as Cavaradossi in Tosca, opposite Dusolina Giannini. After working at this house for a year, he was hired by the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1946, where he performed until 1952, primarily in Verdi and Puccini roles. He also made guest appearances at opera houses in Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro. On October 9, 1943, he participated in the premiere of I. Pizzetti’s opera Incantesimo on American radio under the direction of the composer. Simultaneously, he had a great career as a concert singer, performing in more than 2,000 concerts, often with major symphony orchestras in the USA. In 1953, he had to end his active career for health reasons and then worked as a teacher in New York; one of his students was the soprano Helen Donath.
