Description
ANTON HEKKING (THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS 7 SEPTEMBER 1855 – BERLIN, GERMANY 18 NOVEMBER 1935)
At 17 he became principal cellist of the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra. He then played in the Pavlovsky Orchestra in Russia. In 1873-1878 he studied at the Paris Conservatoire, with Leon and Pierre Jacquard Chevillard. Won a Premier Prix in 1878, then toured with the Russian pianist Anna Yesipova (1851-1914) in Russia. From 1880 he was principal cellist of the Bilsesche Kapelle in Berlin (with Benjamin Bilse (1816-1902) conductor and violinist Franz Kneisel). A conflict with Bilse led to 54 musicians of the orchestra founding the Kapelle Frühere Bilsesche in 1882, shortly thereafter renamed the Berlin Philharmonic . Anton Hekking made a tour of Europe in 1882 and of America in 1888 with the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysa e. 1884-1888: first cellist Berliner Philharmoniker . It is rumored that he pulled practical jokes, which caused tension in the orchestra. He served as first cello of the Boston Symphony from 1889 until 1891; he served in the same post for the New York Symphony from 1895 to 1898. From 1898 he taught at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, in which city he died. Antonius Joannes Franciscus, named “Anton”, was the son of Gerardus Gradus Hekking (1819-1884) and Johanna Sofia Van Hove, and the oncle of the cellists André Hekking and Gérard Hekking.
