MARISE BEAUJON (LYON, FRANCE, 12 OCTOBER, 1890 – PARIS, FRANCE, 16 AUGUST, 1968)

She was discovered by Gaston Beyle, director of the Lyon Opera, at an amateur singing competition. She made her debut at the Lyon Opera in 1919 as Micaëla in Carmen. For a decade, she performed at provincial French theaters before being engaged by the Grand Opéra in Paris in 1921. Her debut there was as Mathilde in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell.

At the Grand Opéra, she became a celebrated member, remaining with the company until 1930. Notably, in 1928, she performed the title role in the French premiere of Puccini’s Turandot.

Her international engagements included appearances in:

Madrid, Barcelona, and Monte Carlo (1926)

Brussels (1928)

Covent Garden in London as Marguerite in Faust (1928)

Cairo (1929)

At the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, she appeared in 1927 in roles such as the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), Rezia (Oberon), Marina (Boris Godunov), and the title role in Massenet’s Thaïs. She also performed at the opera houses in Liège and Antwerp.

In 1930, she joined the Opéra-Comique in Paris, making her debut as Tosca. She later appeared at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris in 1932, starring in Offenbach’s operetta Orphée aux enfers. Despite her success, she retired from the stage due to health issues. Her final triumph was in the title role of Charpentier’s Louise at the Opéra-Comique.
