Gautier, after completing his education at the Conservatories of Marseilles and Paris, began his singing career at the Opera of Angers and later performed at the Théâtre de la Haye in The Hague. In 1896, he debuted at the Grand Opéra in Paris as Sigurd on July 3. His career quickly progressed, and in 1898, he sang the role of Manrico in Il Trovatore during the summer season at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris. The following year, he performed at the Opera in Nice.

In 1901, he joined the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he debuted as Gérald in Léo Delibes’ Lakmé. He remained with the company until at least 1904, performing in productions such as Carmen, Mireille, Cavalleria Rusticana, and La bohème. His repertoire was broad, showcasing his versatility in both lyrical and dramatic roles.

After his time at the Opéra-Comique, Gautier returned to the Grand Opéra during the 1908-1909 season, appearing in productions like Les Huguenots, Samson et Dalila, Faust, Aida, Rigoletto, and Roméo et Juliette.

In 1901, performing under the name Charles Gauthier, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in New York, singing Manrico in Il Trovatore, alongside notable artists such as Giuseppe Campanari, Marcel Journet, and Rosa Olitzka. His international engagements also took him to the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 1907.

It is believed that Gautier retired from the stage around 1910, concluding a distinguished career marked by prominent roles in major European and American opera houses.
