Description

HANS REINMAR (VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, 11 APRIL 1898 – WEST BERLIN, 7 FEBRUARY 1961)

His real name was Johann Eduard Wochinz. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and with Vittorio Vanza in Milan. He made his debut in 1919 at the Olomouc City Theatre as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. His subsequent engagements included the Nuremberg City Theatre (1921–22), the Zurich City Theatre (1922–24), the Dresden State Opera (1925–26), the Hamburg State Opera (1926–28), and finally, from 1928 to 1945, the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

At the Deutsche Oper, he took part in the notable 1930 production of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, in 1931 in Don Carlos, and also in 1931 in Verdi’s Macbeth, all of which were part of the Verdi revival of that era. In 1932, he participated in the world premiere of Kurt Weill’s opera Die Bürgschaft (The Pledge).

He made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, and the opera houses of Brussels and Rome. From 1939 to 1941, he was admired at the Bayreuth Festival as a Wagnerian singer (Donner and Gunther in the Ring cycle, Amfortas in Parsifal). He sang at the Salzburg Festival in 1942 and 1943 as Mandryka in Strauss’s Arabella.

He was a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich from 1945 to 1947 and of the Berlin State Opera from 1947 to 1952. From 1952 until his sudden death, he was again a celebrated member of the Berlin Municipal Opera. He also appeared at the Komische Oper Berlin, where, among other roles, he portrayed Morosus in Strauss’s Die schweigsame Frau in 1956.

His baritone was admired for its rich tone and dramatic expressiveness, particularly in heroic roles. He distinguished himself as a great singing actor in roles such as Iago, Verdi’s Macbeth, and Boris Godunov.
