ALOIS PENNARINI (VIENNA, AUSTRIA, 21 JUNE, 1870 – LIBEREC, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, 23 JUNE, 1927)

His real name was Aloys Federler. He studied singing under Joseph Gänsbacher and Johannes Ress in Vienna. Pennarini made his debut in 1893 at the Stadttheater Pressburg (Bratislava) as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. In the 1895-96 season, he sang at the Stadttheater in Olmütz (Olomouc), and from 1896-97 at the Stadttheater in Elbersfeld. From 1898-1900, he was engaged by the Stadttheater in Graz, where he performed in operas by Richard Wagner. Since 1900, he was a principal tenor at the Stadttheater in Hamburg, where he performed with great success until 1913. In Hamburg, he took part in the premieres of Siegfried Wagner’s Der Kobold (January 29, 1904) and Bruder Lustig (October 13, 1905), as well as the premiere of E. d’Albert’s Tragaldabas (December 3, 1907). He also sang in the German premieres of J. Massenet’s Le Jongleur de Notre Dame (1902 as Jean) and F. Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur (1902 as Maurizio). He guest-starred at the Vienna Court Opera in 1900 and 1903, and performed at the Berlin Court Opera from 1900 to 1912. Additionally, he frequently appeared at the Court Operas of Munich and Stuttgart, and in 1908, he was a guest at the Dresden Court Opera. In 1904, he toured North America with the Savage Opera Company and made guest appearances at Covent Garden, in Amsterdam, and Den Haag. From 1913 to 1920, he was the manager of the Staatstheater in Nürnberg, where he also performed as a singer. In 1920, he became the manager of the Staatstheater in Reichenberg. He was married to the soprano Ella Appelt and also appeared in several movies.
