Description
FRANCESCO CIGADA (BERGAMO, 3 OCTOBER, 1878 – CAPRINO/BERGAMASCO, 6 AUGUST, 1966)
He studied singing with Vincenzo Sabatini and made his debut in 1900 at Trieste as Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata. From 1906 to 1908, he appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, performing in operas such as Il Trovatore, Das Rheingold, Otello, Tosca, Carmen, Faust, and La Bohème. In 1914, he sang the role of Giovanni in the world premiere of Zandonai’s opera Francesco da Rimini, a role he also created later that year at Covent Garden in London. His debut at La Scala came in 1918, where he performed as Amonasro in Verdi’s Aida. In 1920, Cigada made a guest appearance at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, singing Kurwenal in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. He retired from the stage at the age of 46 after the tragic death of his 20-year-old daughter and lived the rest of his life in his native Bergamo.
