Description
EUGENIA MANTELLI (FLORENCE, 1860 – LISBON, 3 MARCH, 1926)
She studied at the Milan Conservatory and made her debut in 1883 at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon as Urbain in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots. The same year, she appeared in Italy, first in Treviso as Kaled in Massenet’s Le Roi de Lahore. Successful tours followed with the celebrated Spanish tenor Julián Gayarre throughout Germany, Italy, and South America. In 1889, she appeared in Buenos Aires opposite Mattia Battistini, and in 1894 she sang in Moscow as a partner of Francesco Tamagno.
In 1896, she performed at Covent Garden in London as Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre (still sung in French). Between 1894 and 1900, she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she made her debut as Amneris in Verdi’s Aida. Her repertoire there included Azucena (Il Trovatore), Emilia (Otello), Ortrud (Lohengrin), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana), Fidès (Le Prophète), Leonora (La Favorita), Nancy (Martha), the Queen (Hamlet), Queen Guinevere in Herman Bemberg’s Elaine (world premiere, 1894), and Dalila (Samson et Dalila).
In 1902, she appeared at the Manhattan Opera House in New York in the title role of Mascagni’s Zanetto. She was again engaged by the Metropolitan Opera for the 1902–1903 season and subsequently toured the United States with her own opera troupe during 1903–1904. In 1904–1905, she appeared in operetta performances in New York.
From 1905 onward, she resided in Lisbon. In 1908, she made a guest appearance at the Teatro Politeama in Genoa as Carmen, and in 1910 she gave her final stage performance in Lisbon.
