EUGEN TRANSKY (RIGA, 25 FEBRUARY, 1886 – SÃO PAULO, 1968)

 

 

 

 

His real name was Aiziles Tabacniks. He was born into a Jewish family in Riga. After completing his education, he made his debut in 1910 at the theatre in Toruń, Poland. In the 1911-1912 season, he appeared at the Hoftheater in Thüringen, followed by a stint at the Stadttheater in Nuremberg from 1912 to 1913. In the 1913-1914 season, he performed at the Opernhaus in Wroclaw, where he appeared in the 1913 German première of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. From 1914 to 1918, due to his Russian nationality, he was forced to interrupt his career.

In the 1919-1920 season, he resumed performing at the Landestheater in Gera. After the First World War, he made guest appearances at the Volksoper in Berlin. From 1926 to 1930, he sang regularly during the radio hour of the Berlin broadcasting company, while also being active as a singing teacher in Berlin.

As a Jew, after 1933, he was banned from performing on German operatic stages. From 1933 to 1937, he performed at the theatre of the Jewish Cultural Alliance in Berlin, where his roles included Samson in Samson et Dalila. In 1936, he sang the role of Florestan in Fidelio for the Jewish Cultural Alliance in Frankfurt a. M. He was expected to emigrate to South America, where he worked as a vocal pedagogue in Rio de Janeiro.
