JULES MOES (MAASTRICHT, 6 NOVEMBER, 1880 – AMSTERDAM, 30 DECEMBER, 1962)

Jules Moes began his career in Amsterdam in 1902, performing in operetta before transitioning to opera, where he sang at the opera houses of Ghent and Antwerp. He became known for his interpretations of Wagner’s operas at these venues. In 1910, Moes was engaged by the German Theatre of Prague, where he performed until 1914 under the pseudonym Julius Peter. His success in Prague led to guest performances in prominent German theaters. However, with the outbreak of World War I, Moes returned to Holland, resuming his career under his original name.

Despite his earlier success, the international recognition Moes hoped for did not materialize. Nonetheless, he remained active in the Dutch operatic scene, performing at various opera houses. His final stage appearance was in 1940 in Amsterdam, where he portrayed Manrico in Il Trovatore. In 1926, he made a guest performance with the Kooperatie Den Haag opera society at the Grand Opéra in Paris.

Jules Moes also left a legacy in recordings, primarily in Dutch, with labels such as Pathé, Gramophone, Polydor, Polyphon, and Homochord.
