TORSTEN LENNARTSSON (STOCKHOLM, 7 NOVEMBER, 1881 – STOCKHOLM, 31 OCTOBER, 1933)

 

 

 

Torsten Vilhelm Lennartsson was a prominent Swedish tenor who received his vocal training in Stockholm under the guidance of Gillis Bratt and Oskar Lejdström. His operatic debut took place in 1908 at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, where he portrayed Nando in Eugen d’Albert’s Tiefland. Lennartsson remained a key member of the Royal Swedish Opera until 1924, excelling in a variety of lyric tenor roles.

Some of his most notable performances at the Royal Swedish Opera included roles in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Giovanni, La Bohème, and Eugene Onegin. He was particularly celebrated for his portrayals of Nadir in Les Pêcheurs de Perles and Shuisky in Boris Godunov, performing in the Swedish premieres of both operas in 1909 and 1911, respectively.

In addition to his operatic success, Lennartsson performed in the 1910 premiere of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s opera Arnljot at the Royal Swedish Opera. He was also known for his versatility, taking on tenor buffo and character tenor roles, and was highly regarded for his interpretations in the concert hall, particularly as a song interpreter.

After retiring from the stage in 1924, Lennartsson dedicated himself to teaching at the Conservatory of Stockholm. Among his notable students were Einar Andersson, Folke Andersson, Folke Cembræus, and the renowned baritone Sigurd Björling.
