GIUSEPPINA BALDASSARRE-TEDESCHI (TRANI, 28 OCTOBER, 1881 – ROME, 30 APRIL, 1961)

She studied at the Liceo Rossini in Pesaro under Brambilla-Ponchielli and Anna Vestri. She made her debut in 1905 at Teatro Coccia in Novara in Mascagni’s opera Iris. Until 1930, she enjoyed a successful career in prominent Italian opera theaters. In 1909, she performed as a guest at Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon, where she also participated in the premiere of Arroyo’s opera Amar de perdiça. In 1912, she appeared at Teatro Real in Madrid as Nedda in Pagliacci, and in 1914 at the Budapest State Opera. She achieved great success at Teatro Costanzi in Rome, performing in Tosca and Madame Butterfly (1915–16), returning in 1920, and again from 1925–26. During her engagements there, she appeared as Maddalena in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello, Marina in Boris Godunov, and in the title role of Catalani’s La Wally. In 1914, she took part in the premiere of Lozzi’s opera L’Elisir di vita at Teatro Comunale in Bologna. She was considered one of the leading Verismo sopranos of her generation. In 1931, she retired from performing and worked as a pedagogue in Milan. From 1936 to 1938, she served as a professor at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where her students included notable singers Licia Albanese, Pia Tassinari, and Stella Roman.
