ARTHUR ENDRÈZE (CHICAGO, 28 NOVEMBER, 1893 – CHICAGO, 15 APRIL, 1975)

 

 

 

 

Arthur Endrèze, born Arthur Endres Kraeckmann, initially studied agronomy at the University of Illinois. His vocal talent was discovered by conductor Walter Damrosch, who encouraged him to pursue a career in singing. In 1918, Endrèze traveled to France, where he studied at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau and later under the renowned tenor Jean de Reszke in Paris. He made his operatic debut in 1925 at the Opéra de Nice as Don Giovanni. Composer Reynaldo Hahn was captivated by his voice, and Endrèze performed in Hahn’s opera productions in Cannes and Deauville until 1929.

In 1928, he joined the Opéra-Comique in Paris, debuting as Karnac in Édouard Lalo’s Le Roi d’Ys. The following year, he made his debut at the Grand Opéra as Valentin in Gounod’s Faust. Endrèze participated in several world premieres there, including Guercœur by Magnard (1931), Maximilien by Milhaud (1932), Un jardin sur l’Oronte by Bachelet (1932), and La Chartreuse de Parme by Sauguet (1939). On March 11, 1937, he sang in the premiere of L’Aiglon by Honegger and Ibert in Monte Carlo.

When Germany occupied France in 1940, Endrèze, as an American citizen, returned to the United States. After the war, he resumed his career in France and in 1946 gave a celebrated performance as Jacob in Méhul’s biblical opera Joseph at the Grand Opéra. His repertoire also included roles such as Herod in Hérodiade, Nevers in Les Huguenots, the title role in Hamlet, Athanaël in Thaïs, Valentin in Faust, Iago in Otello, Germont in La Traviata, Scarpia in Tosca, Telramund in Lohengrin, and Amonasro in Aida.

After retiring from the stage in 1948, Endrèze became a professor at the Conservatory of Kansas City. He later returned to France to teach singing in Paris and concluded his teaching career in Chicago. He was married to Jeanne Krieger-Beligne (1887–1973), who served as a chef de chant at the Opéra.
