ALLEN HINCKLEY (BOSTON, SUFFOLK COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS, USA, 11 OCTOBER, 1877 – YONKERS, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK, USA, 28 JANUARY, 1954)
He first studied singing with Oscar Saenger in New York and later continued his studies in Germany. His stage debut occurred in 1903 at the Municipal Theater in Hamburg, where he performed the role of King Heinrich in Lohengrin. He remained in Hamburg until 1908, and during this time, he appeared in the premiere of Siegfried Wagner’s opera Sternengebot in 1908. From 1906 to 1908, he was also part of the Bayreuth Festival, where he was personally introduced to the festival by Cosima and Siegfried Wagner.
In the 1908-1914 seasons, he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut in the same role of King Heinrich in Lohengrin. At the Met, he became known for his Wagnerian repertoire but also performed the role of Tommaso in the American premiere of Tiefland by E. d’Albert in 1908.
From 1917 to 1923, he taught vocal classes at the Conservatory of Kansas City. Afterward, he continued his work as a pedagogue and choir conductor in New York, leaving a lasting influence on the American music scene.
