ALFRED WALLENSTEIN (CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA, OCTOBER 7, 1898 – NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA, FEBRUARY 8, 1983)

 

 

 

 

From the age of 17, he played the cello in the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. From 1919 to 1922, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Julius Klengel. Upon returning to the United States, he served as principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and later, from 1929 to 1936, of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini.

On Toscanini’s advice—himself originally trained as a cellist—he began to pursue conducting. From 1935 to 1945, he was musical director of radio station WOR. For his work on radio broadcasts of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas and all 26 of Mozart’s piano concertos (with pianist Nadja Reisenberg), he was awarded the Peabody Award in 1942.

From 1943 to 1956, he led the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1947, he received the Ditson Prize. From 1962 to 1964, he taught at the Peabody Conservatory, and from 1968 to 1971 at the Juilliard School.
