HORACE BRITT (ANTWERP, BELGIUM, JUNE 18, 1881 – AUSTIN, USA, FEBRUARY 3, 1971)

He spent his childhood in Paris, where his parents taught him, his brother Roger, and his sister Gaetana music from an early age. He later returned to Antwerp, where Gustave Fass prepared him for admission to the Paris Conservatory. Britt studied at the Paris Conservatory from 1892 in the class of Jules Delsart, winning the First Prize in 1895. In 1897, he performed with the Lamoureux Orchestra, and the following year with the Colonne Orchestra.

Britt subsequently moved to the United States, where he served as principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1905 to 1907 and of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1907 to 1908. During the 1910s, he was principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1924–1925, he held the same position with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. He taught at the Curtis Institute during the 1925–1926 academic year. Around the turn of the 1910s and 1920s, he performed with the Hans Letz String Quartet and later with the Mischa Elman String Quartet. In the 1940s, he led his own string trio.

He participated in the 1928 recording of Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D. 956 (Op. 163), with the London String Quartet.

From 1947, Britt taught at the University of Texas at Austin, becoming a full professor in 1950. He retired in 1963.
