JOSEPH MALKIN (PROPOISK, NR ODESSA, UKRAINE, SEPT 24, 1879 – NEW YORK, NY, SEPT 1, 1969)
After early training in Odessa, he entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1895, winning the premier prix in 1898. Following a tour of France and Germany, he was first cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Arthur Nikisch (1902–8). He made his American debut on 28 November 1909 at the Manhattan Opera House, playing one of Saint-Saëns’ concertos, then toured the United States as a member of the Brussels Quartet. From 1914 to 1919 he was first cellist with the Boston SO, and from 1919 to 1922 with the Chicago SO. He then formed the Malkin Trio with his brothers Jacques (violinist) and Manfred (pianist).
