Description

STEFAN AUBER (VIENNA, 11 MARCH, 1903 – NEW YORK CITY, NOVEMBER, 1986)

Stefan Auber was an Austrian-born cellist who established a distinguished career in Europe and the United States. Born in Vienna on March 11, 1903, he received his first musical instruction from his father and made his public performance debut at the age of eight. He later studied with the renowned German cellist Julius Klengel.

Auber developed a career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. During his European years, he played with the Kolisch Quartet, led by violinist Rudolf Kolisch, and participated in the ensemble’s pioneering performances of contemporary music. In 1940, the quartet took part in the first recording of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire under the composer’s direction.

In 1939, Auber emigrated to the United States, where he continued his musical career. He became principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the celebrated conductor Fritz Reiner, a position he held for many years. He also performed extensively in chamber music and as a soloist, continuing his concert activities into the 1970s.

Stefan Auber died in November 1986, leaving behind a significant contribution to orchestral and chamber music performance in both Europe and America.
