VICTOR E. SORLIN (1877 – 1912)

Victor Sorlin was a Swedish-American cellist renowned for his performances and recordings in the early 20th century. Born in Sweden in 1877, he emigrated to the United States at a young age. Sorlin held positions as first cellist with several leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Symphony Orchestra, and Boston Symphony Orchestra, earning recognition for his expressive playing and technical mastery.

He was also a prolific recording artist, producing at least 29 discs for Victor, Columbia, and Edison between 1907 and 1912, helping to bring the cello repertoire to a wider public.

Tragically, his career was cut short when he died of pneumonia. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter, and was laid to rest at the Old Swedish Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Sorlin’s brief but influential career left a lasting impression on American orchestral performance and the early era of recorded music.
