Description
BARBARA MAUREL (ALSACE-LORRAINE, FRANCE, 1889 – ?)
She came to the USA at the age of five, studied there, and spent her entire career in North America. Initially, she aspired to be a pianist, beginning her training in America and traveling to Paris to complete it. After her vocal talent was discovered in Paris, she studied singing with Jean de Reszke and other teachers. She was engaged by Covent Garden in London for the 1914-15 season, but with the outbreak of World War I, she returned to her native America. There, she performed with the Boston Opera for one season (1917-1918) before leaving the stage to focus entirely on concert singing. Over the next twelve years, she achieved significant success with concert appearances across the major music centers of the United States.
