Description

JOSEF FIDELMAN (TIFLIS, GEORGIA, FEBRUARY 3, 1905 – USA, 1983)

Josef Fidelman was born in Tiflis, Georgia, on February 3, 1905. At the age of five and a half, he made his debut in a piano recital at the Baku Opera House. This marked the beginning of the typical career of a child prodigy, along with studies at the Tiflis Conservatory of Music under Lucian Truskowsky, dean of the piano department.

During his conservatory years, Fidelman was strongly influenced musically and pianistically by a young teacher, Heinrich Neuhaus. In 1921, he toured Turkey for the second time and then went to Berlin, where he continued his studies at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik under Leonid Kreutzer. After graduating in 1929, he participated in the Blüthner International Piano Competition and won first prize. While living in Europe, he concertized extensively.

In 1933, Josef Fidelman settled in the United States of America, where he became a citizen and resumed his teaching career.
