HULDA LASHANSKA (NEW YORK, MARCH 15, 1893 – NEW YORK, JANUARY 17, 1974)

 

 

 

 

Her family was of Russian-Jewish descent. She first studied piano and singing at the Institute of Musical Art in New York under Frieda Ashford, before spending two years studying with the celebrated soprano Marcella Sembrich, who regarded her as her most gifted student.

Following her New York concert debut in 1909, she continued her studies in Europe for two years and appeared in several concerts there between 1909 and 1910. In 1911, she achieved sensational success at Aeolian Hall in New York. She subsequently appeared in concerts with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Walter Damrosch.

In 1913, she interrupted her career following her marriage but returned to the concert stage in 1915. One of her greatest successes came in 1918, when she appeared in a Sunday Night Concert at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Critics compared her voice and interpretations with those of the celebrated soprano Alma Gluck.

During the 1919–20 season, she was again briefly forced to interrupt her career, but soon returned to concert halls throughout the United States. As late as 1936, she gave several acclaimed concerts with the New York Philharmonic under Willem van Hoogstraten and John Barbirolli. From 1937 onward, she worked as a teacher.
