JULIA HEINRICH (PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, 1880 – HAMMOND, LOUISIANA, 1919, 18/9)

 

 

 

 

She was the daughter of the German baritone Max Heinrich (1853–1916). She studied under her father, who worked as a music teacher at an American college. In 1899, they performed together in Montreal. Later, she traveled to Europe and was engaged by the Municipal Theater in Elberfeld during the 1910–1913 seasons. In 1913, she performed as Sieglinde in Die Walküre during a guest appearance in Rotterdam with this ensemble.

From 1913 to 1915, she was active at the Municipal Theater of Hamburg. Subsequently, she was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making her debut in 1915 as Gutrune in Götterdämmerung. Beginning in 1916, she undertook concert tours across the United States.

In 1919, she participated in vocal comparison tests, matching her live voice against her Edison recordings. Tragically, she was killed by a locomotive at a train station in Louisiana, while her accompanist, Lucille Colette, who was nearby, was unharmed.
