Description
LILLIAN BLAUVELT (BROOKLYN, MARCH 16, 1874 – CHICAGO, AUGUST 29, 1947)
Originally, she aspired to become a violinist and, at the age of eight, gave concerts in New York. In 1889, she began studying singing in New York, followed by training with Jacques Bouhy in Paris. In 1893, she made a successful concert debut in Brussels, leading to an engagement at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where she debuted in 1893 as Mireille in Gounod’s Mireille. After a tour in Russia, she returned to the United States and primarily focused on concert singing.
From 1897, she achieved great success in England, both on stage and in concert performances. In 1898, she performed in a court concert for Queen Victoria of England and took part in the Handel Festival at London’s Crystal Palace. In 1899, she made guest appearances in Berlin, and in 1901, she sang Verdi’s Requiem in Rome. In 1902, she performed the Coronation Ode at the coronation of Edward VII in London. She gave concerts across Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, and Switzerland.
From 1903, she frequently appeared at London’s Covent Garden Opera, making her debut as Marguerite in Faust. Her roles at Covent Garden included Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, and Micaela in Carmen. In 1905, she traveled to Russia, and in 1919, she created the title role in the opera Xenia by Serbian composer Alexander Savine, whom she married in 1914.
She continued with concert tours across Europe and America, and during World War I, she performed for English, French, and Serbian soldiers. In 1915, she organized a series of charity concerts for Serbia in Switzerland. Until 1920, she was a regular soloist at the London Promenade Concerts under Henry Wood, having first appeared there in 1898. In 1920, she undertook a triumphant tour of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. She later lived as an educator in Chicago.
