MARGARET ROMAINE (OGDEN, UTAH, USA, 23 SEPTEMBER, 1888 – LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, USA, 30 JUNE, 1984)

 

 

 

 

She initially studied cello but later trained as a vocalist in London and Paris. She first appeared in a few minor roles at the Opéra-Comique in Paris before returning to the United States in 1915, where she performed in musical comedies and as an entertainment singer. (Her sister, Hazel Dawn, was a well-known star in this genre.) In 1918, she was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making her debut as Musetta in La Bohème, a role for which she became particularly admired. During the following six seasons until 1924, she sang lighter soprano roles, though she was best known for her portrayal of Musetta and performed infrequently overall. Afterward, she focused on concert and song recitals and occasionally returned to musical comedies. Upon retiring from the stage, she became a singing teacher in New York.
