Description

MARIE TIFFANY (CHICAGO, JULY 8, 1880 – NEW YORK, APRIL 12, 1948)

Her real name was Marie Burg. Her family was of Norwegian origin. As a child she came to Phoenix (Arizona) and first sang there in church choirs. She studied singing in Paris, there she became a soloist of the American church and made her debut as a member of the Compagnie Internationale Lyrique. By the entry of the USA into the war she came back in 1916 to America and was engaged by the New York Metropolitan Opera, where she made her debut in a quite small part (as a milliner) in  “Rosenkavalier”. Up to 1929 she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera, however, she was roofed in spite of the beauty of her voice mostly only with smaller parts. She appeared also in the premieres of G. Puccini’s ”II Tabarro” and ”Gianni Schicchi” (14.12.1918). She sang also in the following opera premieres: ”Shanewis” of Cadman (1918), ”L’Oiseau blue” by Albert Wolff (27. 12. 1919), ”Cleopatra’s Night” of Henry Hadley (1921), ”Louise” of G. Charpentier (1921), ”Zazà” of R. Leoncavallo (1920) and ”La pure Fiammette” by Xavier Leroux (1919). She was an excellent concert and oratorio soloist.
