Description

ROXY KING (ALLIANCE, OHIO, USA, 1878 – BRAZIL, RIO DE JANEIRO ?)

When she was 13 years old, her family moved to Brazil. At the age of 16, she performed in Rio de Janeiro in Alberto Nepomuceno’s opera Artemis. Her performance was so successful that she was sent to Europe for further training, where she studied singing with Selma Nicklass-Kempner at the Berlin Conservatory.

In 1901, she made her debut at the Theater des Westens in Berlin as Milada in B. Smetana’s opera Dalibor. The following year, she joined the Hofoper in Berlin, where she substituted for the renowned Lilli Lehmann as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. She achieved great success there, particularly as Sélika in G. Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine, performing the role 60 times in a single season.

At both the Hofoper and the Theater des Westens in Berlin, she partnered with celebrated singers such as Enrico Caruso and Francisco d’Andrade. She expanded her repertoire with roles from R. Wagner’s operas, including Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, Venus in Tannhäuser, and Elsa in Lohengrin.

In 1908, she visited her family in Brazil, where she married and retired from the stage. She later worked in Brazil as a vocal pedagogue.
