SUSAN STRONG (BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, 3 AUGUST, 1870 – LONDON, ENGLAND, 11 MARCH, 1946)

 

 

 

 

Daughter of Dennis Strong, a senator and mayor of Brooklyn, she studied at the Royal College of Music in London under Francis Korbay. She made her debut in 1895 as a member of the Hedmont Opera Company in London, performing as Sieglinde in Die Walküre.

In 1897 and during the 1899-1900 season, she appeared at Covent Garden in London, where she performed as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre, Venus in Tannhäuser, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. She was engaged for the Bayreuth Festival in 1896 but ultimately did not perform there. She later gave a guest performance at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.

In 1896, she sang with the Mapleson Opera Company in New York, performing the roles of Marguerite in Faust and Elsa in Lohengrin. During the 1899-1900 season, she achieved great success at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, making her debut as Sieglinde and stepping in for the ill Emma Eames. At the Metropolitan, she also performed Elsa in Lohengrin, Venus, and Gutrune in Götterdämmerung.

In 1901, she made a guest appearance at the Vienna Court Opera. She later became a renowned concert singer in England. Following her retirement from performing, she opened a luxury laundry business, Blanchisserie de Luxe, in London.
