HARRY EVAN WILLIAMS (MINERAL RIDGE, OHIO, 7 SEPTEMBER, 1867 – 2 AKRON, OHIO 4 MAY, 1918)
His parents were from Wales. His voice discovered in an amateur ensemble and he studied singing with Louise von Feilitsch in Cleveland. In 1891 he gave a first concert in Galion (Ohio), but made his official debut in 1896 at the Worcester Festival. After further studies with Saubage, Ben Davies and Ffrangeon Davies in New York, he undertook an England tour in 1903, followed by a second in 1906. 1910 was a third tour of England. Evan Williams was considered the most important American oratorio tenor of his time. At the same time he was a valued song-interpreter. He is said to have given over a thousand recitals in America. From 1896 to 1911 he was repeatedly celebrated at the Worcester Festival. In 1912 he undertook another tour in England together with the New Symphony Orchestra under Sir Landon Ronald and the pianist Irene Scharrer.
