Early Life and Training

John Carter was born in New York City in 1911. He developed his musical talents early and went on to study voice, eventually training at the Juilliard School. His formal education prepared him for a successful career as a tenor.

Metropolitan Opera and Auditions of the Air

In the 1937–1938 season, Carter won the prestigious Metropolitan Opera’s Auditions of the Air. This victory led to a notable career with the Metropolitan Opera, where he performed in numerous productions. His vocal ability and stage presence earned him a place as a frequent performer with the company throughout the late 1930s and 1940s.

Radio Career

In the late 1930s, Carter succeeded Nelson Eddy on NBC’s “Chase and Sanborn Hour”, a popular radio program that included a mix of classical music, comedy, and performance. Carter’s performances on the show brought him widespread recognition and helped expand his audience beyond the opera house.

He later hosted his own classical music radio show, continuing to contribute to the genre and further solidifying his reputation as a versatile artist.

Recitals and Concerts

During the 1940s and 1950s, Carter also gave solo recitals across the country, allowing him to connect with audiences and showcase his talent as a concert artist. His performances included not just opera, but a range of classical vocal music.

Later Years and Legacy

John Carter continued to perform and contribute to the classical music scene throughout his life, both on the stage and through his radio work. He passed away in 1988, leaving behind a legacy as one of the leading American tenors of his time.

His influence extended beyond his opera performances, as he helped introduce classical music to broader audiences through his work on radio.
