VERNON STILES (OTTUMWA, IOWA, 1880 – LOS ANGELES, 1947)

 

 

 

 

After serving as an Army captain in World War I he went to Paris, where studied singing with Marchesi. After returning to the United States, in 1900 he joined the Bostonians, a New York light opera company. Then he became a member of Henry Savage Opera Company. In 1907 he appeared at the Garden Theater in Kansas as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. In 1909 he made his debut at the Gratz Opera as Faust. The same year Vienna Opera engaged him to perform there for five season. At the Bayreuth Festival he appeared under Siegfried Wagner’s direction. Later he also sang at the Metropolitan Opera and with the Chicago Opera Company. In 1916 he gave a recital at the Carnegie Hall. He retired from the stage in 1924.
