MICHEL GUSIKOFF (NEW YORK, MAY 15, 1893 – NEW YORK, JULY 10, 1978)

 

 

 

 

Michel Gusikoff was born in New York City. He followed the tradition of a musical family. His father was a violin maker. His great‐grandfather, Michal Jozef Guzikov, was a famous xylophonist in Europe in the early 1800’s. Mr. Gusikoff studied violin with Franz Kneisel and composition with Percy Goetschius. His long career as concert master began in New York City with the Russian Symphony Orchestra under Modest Altschuler. He subsequently held the same position with other orchestras, among them were the New York Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. He was concert master and associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony when he retired from national orchestras in 1939. He later, though, became concert master of the Bell Telephone Hour orchestra on radio under Andre Kostalanetz. He is survived by his wife, Marie Kryl, a pianist; a son, Bob, of Santa Monica, Calif.; a daughter, Kiki Suslow of Scarsdale, N.Y., and six grandchildren.
