First, he worked as a sculptor, but then took up singing studies with Archaimbault in Paris and made his debut in 1918 at the Théâtre Moncey in Paris. He then made guest appearances at various Parisian operetta stages, but in 1919 accepted a permanent engagement at the theater in Rouen. After singing at the Ghent Opera House from 1920 to 1921, he appeared as Roméo in C. Gounod’s ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ at the Grand Opéra in Paris in 1922. From 1922 to 1925, he was with the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. In 1925, he made successful guest appearances at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. He then appeared regularly at major French provincial theaters and, with increasing success, also performed outside of France. In 1926, he toured Italy, performing in Parma, Turin, and Naples. In 1927, he was a guest in South America, singing at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, as well as at the opera houses in Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. In 1929, he performed in Brno and Prague, and in 1930 appeared at Covent Garden as Roméo. In 1936, he returned to Covent Garden as Hoffmann in ‘’Les Contes d’Hoffmann’’, and in 1937 he sang as Orphée in C. W. Gluck’s ‘’Orphée et Eurydice’’. In 1931, he performed at the Antwerp Opera, and the same year, he sang in Austria, including at the Vienna State Opera and the Graz Opera House, as well as in the Balkans, notably in Yugoslavia. An extensive tour of France and North Africa followed in the 1932-1933 season. From 1937 to 1939, he was heard at the Chicago Opera and then undertook a major tour of the United States and Canada from 1939 to 1940. Even after World War II, he continued his extensive guest performances. He sang at the Zurich Opera House in 1946, at the Grand Opéra Paris in 1949 (as Radamès in ‘’Aida’’), and toured the Philippines in 1950. After that, he performed at opera houses in the French provinces and in 1955 appeared for the last time at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels as José in ‘’Carmen’’. He was married to the singer Elen Dosia, who was engaged with him at the Chicago Opera.
