JAN TOMASOW (ARGENTINA, BUENOS AIRES, 12 JULY, 1914 – USA, 27 NOVEMBER, 1961)

 

 

 

 

Jan Tomasow was born on July 13, 1914 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and took up violin lessons when he was 4 years old. At 22, unable to win a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture by reason of being Jewish, he went to Europe on his father’s own means in order to take lessons with violin masters such as Jacques Thibaud and others. Later, after returning to Argentina, he decided to move to the US and became “concertino” with the WGN radio station orchestra in Chicago (the orchestra was in existence from 1925 to 1956). From Chicago, he moved to Washington, DC where he took the post of concertmaster with the National Symphony Orchestra under Hans Kindler and Howard Mitchell. In 1952 he moved to New York and was concertmaster with The Little Orchestra under Thomas Schermann until 1957. He was the soloist on many of Vanguard’s early recordings of baroque music, including Vivaldi’s L’Estro Armonico with the Chamber Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera under Mario Rossi (and Willi Boskovski as the other soloist), various Violin Concertos with the same ensemble under the direction from the Harpsichord of Gustav Leonhardt, The Four Seasons with I Solisti di Zagreb under Antonio Janigro, and Bach’s Brandenburgs and Mozart’s Divertimentos K 287 and 334 with the full Vienna State Opera Orchestra under Felix Prohaska. He played Bernstein’s Serenade for violin, strings, harp and percussion with the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra under the composer’s baton.
