HANS DUHAN (VIENNA, AUSTRIA JANUARY 27, 1890 – VIENNA, AUSTRIA MARCH 6, 1971)
Hans Duhan studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and made his stage debut in 1910 at the Municipal Theater of Opava, where he performed until 1913. He then joined the Municipal Theater of Teplice-Schönau for the 1913-14 season. In 1914, he became a member of the Vienna Court Opera (now the Vienna State Opera), where he remained a principal baritone until his retirement in 1940.
In Vienna, Duhan gained significant popularity and was a notable presence at the Salzburg Festival, where he frequently performed Mozart roles. His appearances included:
- 1922: Don Giovanni
- 1922 and 1927: Count in Le nozze di Figaro (Figaro’s Wedding)
- 1928: Papageno in Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)
He continued to perform at the festival until 1937, receiving high acclaim from audiences.
Duhan’s notable performances included:
- October 4, 1916: Premiere of the revised version of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos in Vienna.
- January 20, 1934: World premiere of Franz Lehár’s operetta Giuditta.
- 1922: Guest appearance in Amsterdam and again in 1924 with the Vienna State Opera ensemble performing Ariadne auf Naxos.
His repertoire was diverse, featuring roles such as:
- King Solomon in Königin von Saba (The Queen of Sheba)
- Amfortas in Parsifal
- Frank in Die tote Stadt
- Scarpia in Tosca
- Escamillo in Carmen
In addition to his performing career, Duhan made significant contributions as a composer, creating several vocal works. He also premiered Ernst Krenek’s song cycle Reisetagebuch aus den österreichischen Alpen in 1930 and Franz Schmidt’s oratorio Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln in 1938.
Duhan was appointed as a professor at the Vienna Music Academy in 1932, and he also worked as a director and conductor at the Vienna State Opera.
