RICHARD KROTSCHAK (HOLZMÜHL (NEAR IGLAU, BOHEMIA), DECEMBER 30, 1904 † VIENNA, MARCH 9, 1989)
Richard Krotschak received his first musical training at the Prague Conservatory. From 1922 to 1924 he then studied with Friedrich Buxbaum and from 1924 with Paul Grümmer at the Vienna Academy of Music. From 1924 to 1934 he worked as a cellist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. From 1934 he was with the Vienna Philharmonic. He also successfully pursued a career as a soloist. From 1937 he was a member of the Schneiderhan Quartet together with Otto Strasser and Ernst Morawec as well as a member of the Musikvereinsquartet, the Boskovsky Trio and the Barylli Quartet. From 1932 to 1937 he led the concert class for cello at the New Vienna Conservatory. From 1945 to 1969 he worked as a contract teacher and from 1969 to 1978 as a lecturer for cello at the Vienna Music Academy. His students included Franz Bartolomey , Georg Frischenschlager and Werner Resel. Richard Krotschak received the Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1955 and the Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1965.
