FRITZI JOKL (VIENNA, 23 MARCH, 1895 – NEW YORK CITY, 15 OCTOBER, 1974)

 

 

 

 

She was trained by Frau Rosenthal-Ranner in Vienna and made her debut in 1917 at the Frankfurt Opera House, where she remained until 1922. There, she achieved her first major success as Rosina in The Barber of Seville. From 1922 to 1923 she was engaged at the Darmstadt State Theatre, from 1923 to 1925 at the Berlin Volksoper, and from 1925 to 1926 at the Cologne Opera House. In 1923 she appeared as the Waldvogel in Siegfried at Covent Garden in London, and from 1923 to 1924 she took part in a Dutch tour organized by Cornelis Bronsgeest’s opera company.

In 1926 she became the leading coloratura soprano of the Munich State Opera, where she was especially admired as a Mozart interpreter. There, in 1927, she performed in the world premiere of E. Wolf-Ferrari’s opera Das Himmelskleid. In 1928 she sang Despina in Così fan tutte at the Salzburg Festival. She appeared at the Vienna State Opera in 1930, and in 1932 in Amsterdam as Konstanze in The Abduction from the Seraglio. In 1934 she toured France with a traveling Mozart opera company.

Because she was Jewish, from 1933 she was restricted to performing only in Germany at the Theater des Jüdischen Kulturbunds in Berlin, where she sang until 1936. That year she emigrated to North America, though she rarely appeared on stage thereafter. In New York she married the journalist and author Jack Siegel. Her voice is preserved only on Parlophon recordings made in 1928.
