LOLA BEETH (KRAKÓW, 23 NOVEMBER, 1861 – BERLIN, 18 MARCH, 1940)
Lola Beeth was born in Cracow, Poland in 1864. She began her vocal studies in Lemburg, and then studied in Vienna, Paris, Milan, and Berlin. She made a sensational success at her debut as Elsa in Lohengrin at the Berlin Opera in 1882, remaining there until 1888. From 1888-1895 she sang at the Vienna Opera. In 1892 & 1895 she appeared as a guest at the Paris Opera, and during the 1895-1896 season, she sang at the Metropolitan Opera. In those four months she sang 33 performances of 8 roles, including Micaela in Carmen, Nannetta in Falstaff, Marguerite in Faust, Eva in Die Meistersinger, Elsa in Lohengrin, Nedda, and Sieglinde. She then sang at Covent Garden, the Imperial Operas at St. Petersburg and Moscow, and in Warsaw. From 1898-1901 she was again at the Vienna Opera, and later lived in Berlin where she gave guest performances and concerts and also began to teach. Beeth died in 1940.
