HERMANN GALLOS (VIENNA, AUSTRIA, 21 JANUARY, 1886 – VIENNA, AUSTRIA, 20 FEBRUARY, 1957)

First, he studied law at the University of Vienna but also took singing lessons at the Vienna Conservatory with Philipp Forstén. He joined the Vienna Academic Choral Society, and his voice was discovered during a tour of this choir in North America. In 1915, he made his debut at the Vienna Court Opera, where he remained throughout his long career as it later became the Vienna State Opera. He became the first tenor buffo at the Vienna Opera and was immensely popular with opera audiences in the Austrian capital. On October 4, 1916, at the Vienna Court Opera, he participated in the world premiere of the revised version of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. As early as 1922, he sang the role of Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Salzburg Festival, and he continued to perform at the festival nearly every year until 1950. There, he appeared in roles such as Valzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier (1929–1935, 1937–1939, 1941, and 1946), Pedrillo (1922, 1926, 1932), Jaquino in Fidelio (1927–1929 and 1932–1933), Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro (1925, 1927, 1930–1935, 1941), Augustin Moser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1936–1938), and, in 1950, his final role as the First Prisoner in Fidelio. He also appeared frequently in Salzburg’s Mozart and church concerts.

In 1928, he performed in a guest appearance with the Vienna Opera at the Grand Opéra in Paris. He was highly esteemed as a concert and oratorio singer, particularly in the context of the Salzburg Festival. Almost until his death, he continued to perform on the Vienna State Opera stage and in concert halls. Since 1937, he also served as a professor at the Vienna Music Academy.
