LUCIEN VAN OBBERGH (SCHAERBEEK, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, 1887 – BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, OCTOBER, 1959)

 

 

 

 

He studied singing at the conservatories of Brussels and Paris and made his debut in 1913 at the Opéra de Nice. From 1914 to 1918, he performed at the Théâtre des Galéries in Brussels. In 1918, he joined the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he enjoyed a highly successful career spanning approximately forty years. He also made guest appearances at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, as well as at the Opéras de Monte-Carlo and Nice.

In 1932, he performed in the Belgian premiere of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, showcasing his versatility in both traditional and contemporary repertoires. Later in his career, he dedicated himself to teaching singing in Brussels. His few recordings, made for Polydor/Decca, capture a sample of his artistry.
