Description
MAURICE FELIX JOSEPH DAMBOIS (LUIK, BELGIUM, 30 MARCH, 1889 – LUIK, BELGIUM, 12 NOVEMBER, 1969)
He was son of music teacher Joseph Hubert Dambois and Marie Henriette Laura Gillard. He studied at the Conservatory of Liège (1899- 1905). Already at the age of twelve he played at the casino orchestra of Spa. He was a member of the Eugène Ysaÿe’s string trio. He made concert tours through Germany, England, France, Netherlands and Portugal. In the meantime he also taught at the conservatory and in 1912 became a professor. In the First World War he moved to England and made a well-received concert tour through the United States. Once back in Belgium he started teaching at the Royal Conservatory Brussels. Among his students were Victor Legley and Edmond Baert. During his lessons he promoted, among other things, works of Belgian composers such as Servais, Ernest Demunck and Jules Deswert. Ysaÿe dedicated his Sonata for cello solo (Op. 28) to him, Joseph Jongen did the same with his Sonata for violin and cello (co-dedicated to Alfred Dubois). He made records for Columbia and Vocalion.
