LAURE BERGÉ (FRANCE, 1892 – IXELLES, NEAR BRUSSELS, 4. 4. 1961)

 

 

 

 

She made her debut in 1911 at the age of just 19 as Siebel in Gounod’s Faust at the Bayonne Theatre. Following engagements at the opera houses of Bordeaux, Algiers, and Lyon, she joined the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels in 1919. She remained there until 1927, achieving a very successful career with a repertoire that highlighted her versatility in both French and German operas.

Her notable roles included Alceste and Armide in Gluck’s operas, Leonore in Fidelio, Venus in Tannhäuser, Ortrud in Lohengrin, Kundry in Parsifal, and Brünnhilde in Die Walküre and Siegfried. She also portrayed Valentine in Meyerbeer’s The Huguenots, Rachel in Halévy’s La Juive, the title role in Gounod’s Sapho, Salomé in Massenet’s Hérodiade, Carmen, and Judith in Honegger’s opera of the same name. Additional roles included Aida, Leonore in Donizetti’s La Favorite, Tosca, and Marina in Boris Godunov.

In 1919, she made guest appearances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and also performed in Italy, further enhancing her international standing.

Since 1924, she was married to James Thirior, the head of the costume department at the Théâtre de la Monnaie.
