ADOLPHE (ALPHONSE) MARÉCHAL (LIÈGE, 26 SEPTEMBER, 1867 – BRUSSELS, 1 FEBRUARY, 1935)

 

 

 

 

He began his musical education at the Liège Conservatory and made his professional debut in 1891 in Dijon. His early career saw him performing across various French provincial theaters, steadily building his reputation.

In 1895, he was engaged by the prestigious Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made his debut as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen on October 7, 1895. His tenure at the Opéra-Comique saw him performing a wide range of roles, including Turridu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Sylvain in Les Dragons de Villars, Gérald in Lakmé, des Grieux in Manon, Vincent in Mireille, Araquil in La Navarraise, Un Faucheur in Le Pardon de Ploërmel, Nadir in Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Mergy in Le Pré aux Clercs, and Mylio in Le Roi d’Ys.

In addition to his regular repertoire, he played pivotal roles in several world premieres at the Opéra-Comique. Notably, he originated roles in Louise (1900), Grisélidis (1901), La Reine Fiammette (1903), and Le Chemineau (1907). He also appeared in the premiere of Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame at the Monte Carlo Opera and was well received in the Paris premiere of La Bohème, where he sang the role of Rodolphe (Rodolfo).

His international career included a successful debut at Covent Garden in London in 1902, where he again performed as Don José in Carmen. Maréchal’s talent took him to other major opera houses, including the Palais Garnier in Paris, Nice, Moscow, and Brussels, where he was met with acclaim.

Unfortunately, his promising career was cut short when he experienced a crisis in both his voice and health, leading to his retirement from the stage in 1907. Despite his early retirement, his contributions to opera, particularly at the Opéra-Comique, remain significant in the history of French opera.
