Description
ALFRED DUBOIS (MOLENBEEK, BRUSSELS, 19. 11. 1898 – BRUSSELS, 24. 03. 1949)
He graduated from the Brussels Conservatory and continued his studies privately under Eugène Ysaÿe. In 1920, during the celebrations organized on Ysaÿe’s initiative to mark the centenary of Henri Vieuxtemps, he won the violin competition and was awarded the Queen’s Special Prize. This event later became the basis for the establishment of the regular Henri Vieuxtemps Violin Competition, of which Dubois is traditionally regarded as the first laureate.
For many years, Dubois performed in a duo with the pianist Marcel Maas. Together they made a number of recordings, including sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and, most notably according to contemporary critics, the sonatas of César Franck and Claude Debussy. In the 1940s, Dubois also led a string quartet.
Alongside his performing career, Dubois served as professor of violin at the Brussels Conservatory. His most distinguished student, assistant for eight years, and eventual successor was Arthur Grumiaux.
