Description

CHARLES WARWICK EVANS (LONDON, ENGLAND 1885 – LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 1974)

He studied at the Royal College of Music under William Whitehouse and then became principal ‘cello in the Beecham Symphony Orchestra and subsequently the Queen’s Hall Orchestra. In 1908, he formed the idea of a string quartet worked up to the standard of a solo virtuoso, and the result was the London String Quartet. The Quartet gave its first concert in January 1910 and thereafter had a long and distinguished international career. After the dissolution of the London Quartet, which occurred for financial reasons, he worked primarily in the United States (also as member of the Pro Arte Quartet). In 1941, he took part in the Los Angeles concerts of the former London Quartet. He also taught (among his students, in particular, Florence Hooton).
