PETAR RAICHEV (PETAR RAITSCHEFF) (VARNA, 9 MARCH, 1887 – SOFIA, 30 AUGUST, 1960)
He began his education in St. Petersburg under Umberto Mazetti. In 1912, he went to Italy, where he completed his studies with Fernando de Lucia in Naples. He made his debut in St. Petersburg in 1913. Until 1920, he sang in Russia, primarily in St. Petersburg, performing roles such as Lenski in Eugene Onegin, Hermann in The Queen of Spades, Canio in Pagliacci, and Rodolfo in La Bohème. In 1920, he returned to Italy and spent the following 15 years guesting at major European opera houses, particularly in Germany. He performed at the State Opera of Vienna and Berlin (1924), as well as in Leipzig, Dresden, and Hamburg, and was part of the ensemble at the Berlin City Opera in the 1924-25 season. From 1931-33, he was a member of the Russian Opera in Paris, with which he undertook extensive tours in Europe and South America. During the 1933-35 seasons, he was engaged by the Croatian National Opera in Zagreb. In 1936, he guest-starred at the Hannover Opera, and in 1942, he appeared at the Wiener Volksoper. After World War II, he returned to his native Bulgaria and founded the opera ensemble in Varna in 1947. This company later performed at the National Opera House in Sofia, among other venues. He retired from the stage in 1950 and was a pedagogue at the Sofia Conservatory from 1950-58. In 1951, he published his autobiography in Sofia.
