Cherniavsky came from a very musical family. Already in 1901 he performed with his brothers Leo and Mischel as a Cherniavsky trio. From 1901 to 1906 he was on a very successful European tour with his brothers. In 1905 his family emigrated to Austria and settled in Vienna. There he received private lessons from pianist Theodor Leschetizky , who influenced him very much. Cherniavsky separated in 1934 after the farewell concert of the Cherniavsky Trio in Salt Lake City and stayed in Canada. He had Canadian citizenship since 1922. He married a Canadian and, in addition to his performances, also made a lot of money in music education. Together with the composer Allan de Ridder , he was also instrumental in building the “Vancouver Symphony Orchestra”. In 1958 he once again toured South Africa with his brothers; the trio could not build on the previous successes. Cherniavsky founded the Cherniavsky Junior Music Club in 1967 . An attempt was made to teach classical music to children and young people. As a member, children got free or at least discounted tickets for concerts and operas, but the musical education should also be improved. In 1978 the main sponsor “Chevron Canada” withdrew and in 1985 the club had to disband due to financial reasons. Jan Cherniavsky died on January 8, 1989 in Toronto at the age of almost 97.
