HYMAN BRESS (CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, 30 JUNE, 1931 – MONTREAL, CANADA, 30 OCTOBER, 1995)
Bress had the first violin lessons from his father and made his debut nine years old with the city of Cape Town Symphony Orchestra (now the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1946 to 1951 he studied with Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, after which he went to Montreal, where he gave concerts and appeared on the CBC radio. With Mildred Goodman, Otto and Walter Joachim , he founded the (third) Toronto String Quartet in 1955, whose first violinist he was until 1963. In the 1958-59 season he was also concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In the following years he performed with major symphony orchestras in Canada, the United States and Europe, touring the Soviet Union (1966) and the Far East (1973) until he retired in the 1980s. Bress played the world premieres of Otto Joachim’s Concertante No. 1 (1957), Kelsey Jones’s Introduction and Fugue (1959), Violet Archer’s Concerto (1960) and Udo Kasemet’s Concerto.
